Description

Serving as the flagship institution and oldest school of the university system of California, Berkeley has become a leading public research institution in the United States since its foundation in 1868.

Originally, Berkeley boasted small teaching faculty and handful of students, but it quickly expanded and soon become a prime destination for top students from California, United States, and the world. By 1873, California’s undergraduate enrollment consisted of more women than men, which made it unusual at the time.

During World War II, Berkeley became a world leader in the fields of science, engineering, and aeronautics. Berkeley faculty Ernest Orlando Lawrence and J. Robert Oppenheimer led the quest to discover and create and the first atomic bomb. James Doolitle, Robert McNamara, and Chester Nimitz graduated from Berkeley and went on to successful military careers.

Despite its strong connection to military research, Berkeley soon became famous for its activism. During the 1960s, Berkeley students started the Free Speech Movement to oppose the Vietnam War and staged the People’s Park protest in 1969.

Located near San Francisco, Berkeley’s campus spreads out over a thousand acres, which includes prestigious research facilities such as the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. On campus, Berkeley boasts an ecological preserve and botanical gardens. In 1898, French architect Émile Bérnard won a contest to design Berkeley’s campus, which has been recognized as one of the most beautiful in the world. In addition to impressive buildings, Berkeley students enjoy some immaculate terrain, such as Strawberry Creek and Eucalyptus Grove, which surround and penetrate the campus.

You will enjoy the attention to detail and subtle grasp of communal  spaces in each print,  making  these landmarks and their history a warm part of your home or office.  Each Panoramic Graphics edition print features artisanal inks on high quality lithographic paper and is authenticated by the Rich Ahern estate.   Grow your art collection or give as a gift.
